Crime Tips

Verizon Call Trace

If a VICTIM has a problem with harassing or threatening telephone calls to their HARD LINE (home, work) they should utilize the CALL TRACE feature *57.

1. Let the phone ring at least twice before answering it. The VICTIM does not need to keep the caller on the line for any length of time.

2. Hang up, lift the receiver and dial *57 (rotary use 1157).

3. Stay on the line and listen for a recording that tells the VICTIM whether or not the CALL TRACE was activated and if the call was successfully traced. The VICTIM may also call the UNLAWFUL CALL CENTER (UCC) 1-800-518-5507 (TTY 1-800-254-5959) Monday through Friday 8:30 AM-5:00 PM to verify that the call was traced or it matches previous CALL TRACES.

NOTE: This process will also work with AT&T, MCI and many other carriers. It will not work with Sprint or wireless phones.

4. The VICTIM should take notes detailing the date(s) and time(s) of the call. Also note the content of the call or anything else descriptive.

5. The VICTIM should contact this agency and make a report. The VICTIM should be provided with the case number, Officer’s name, Department name and Department address.

6. The VICTIM should call the VERIZON UNLAWFUL CALL CENTER at 1-800-518-5507 (TTY 1-800-254-5959) Monday through Friday 8:30 AM-5:00 PM and be prepared to give the information provided in step #5.

7. Verizon will give them a Verizon case number. This should be forwarded to the investigating officer.

8. If the telephone number is published, the information from the CALL TRACE will be sent to the victim via mail. They should contact the investigating officer with this information. If the telephone number was BLOCKED, RESTRICTED OR UNPUBLISHED the investigating officer will be notified by mail.

9. If the content of the telephone call constitutes an INDICTABLE OFFENSE, a GRAND JURY SUBPOENA will be needed to access the subscriber information for the unwanted telephone call/number.

10. If the call DOES NOT constitute an indictable offense, subscriber information cannot be gained from either a Municipal or Grand Jury Subpoena.
