The Holmdel Township Police Department is committed to using the latest technology and investigative tools. This includes the use of highly trained police canine teams.
Holmdel currently has three canine teams in service: K-9
Officer Edward Martinez, with his partner Buddy; K-9 Officer William Bernard, with his partners Harley
and Hunter; and K-9 Officer Joseph Van Pelt with his partner Diogi.
Patrolman Martinez joined the Holmdel Police Department in December 2000. Martinez was
formerly a police officer with the Jersey City Police Department assigned to the Emergency Services and K-9 Units. His partner Buddy is cross-trained for
explosives detection and patrol
(which includes locating/tracking wanted or missing persons, evidence
recovery, criminal apprehension, and handler protection).
William Bernard joined the Department in March 2002.
Prior to this, he was a member of the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office
for two years. Bernard has two K-9 partners: Hunter -
trained in explosives, and Harley - cross-trained for narcotic
detection and patrol.
Joseph Van Pelt joined the Holmdel Police
Department in October 2005. He and his Partner Diogi are
cross-trained in narcotic detection, and patrol.
